Pumping moms balance parenthood, work, and everything in between. World Breast Pumping Day, celebrated annually on January 27, is our chance to honor the resilience, dedication, and love it takes to make breast pumping part of your journey. Whether you're exclusively pumping, pumping at work, or integrating it into your breastfeeding routine, this day is all about YOU.
History of World Breast Pumping Day
The story of breast pumping dates back to the 19th century, when pumps were primarily medical devices used to assist with inverted nipples or help small or weak infants nurse. Breast pumps were used professionally until 1991 when Medela introduced its first electric-powered, vacuum-operated breast pump for personal use.
By 2017, Wendy Armbruster, creator of the award-winning PumpEase™ hands-free pumping bra, established World Breast Pumping Day. Her goal was to encourage pumping moms worldwide to celebrate their successes and joys in a supportive, digital community.
Why World Breast Pumping Day Matters
For many moms, pumping isn’t just a choice—it’s a necessity. It bridges the gap between nourishing your baby and navigating life’s demands, like returning to work, managing medical challenges, or creating a little extra flexibility.
Breast pumping is:
- Resilience: Managing schedules, finding private spaces, and showing up for your baby no matter what.
- Dedication: Prioritizing your child’s nutrition even on overwhelming days.
- Innovation: Using tools like hands-free pumps, apps, and freeze-drying services to simplify the journey.
Why Breast Milk Matters
Breast milk offers unparalleled nourishment, promoting both short- and long-term health for babies and mamas alike. It’s cost-effective, waste-free, and environmentally friendly. For moms who pump, it provides the flexibility to rest, work, or manage other responsibilities while ensuring their baby gets the best start.
