We’ve Been There Too: Why Breastfeeding Awareness Month Matters

August is a special month in our community—one dedicated to honoring, uplifting, and supporting the breastfeeding journey. It’s Global Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and within it, we celebrate both National Breastfeeding Week and Black Breastfeeding Week. These observances are moments to reflect, educate, and stand beside every parent and caregiver doing their best to nourish their baby with love and care.

At Milk by Mom, we’ve lived these stories. We've been the moms pumping in storage closets, worrying about milk going to waste, juggling bottle prep with back-to-back meetings, and doing everything we can to hold onto the feeding goals we set for ourselves and our babies. That’s why we’re so passionate about advocacy and access for all breastfeeding families. Because with the right support systems in place, so much more becomes possible.

National Breastfeeding Week: A Global Reminder That Support Matters

Breastfeeding Week is recognized in over 170 countries and reminds us that breastfeeding is a public health priority. This year’s theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” emphasizes the need for lasting, community-wide efforts to protect and promote breastfeeding.

The benefits of breast milk are powerful. It delivers optimal nutrition, strengthens immunity, and reduces health risks for both baby and parent. But reaching personal breastfeeding goals often requires much more than determination—it takes informed healthcare providers, supportive workplaces, welcoming public spaces, and encouragement from loved ones.

We believe that when a parent is empowered and supported, everything changes. And this week is our reminder that breastfeeding success is a shared responsibility, not just an individual task.

Black Breastfeeding Week: Celebrating Strength, Confronting Disparities

Black Breastfeeding Week was created to close critical gaps and raise awareness about the systemic barriers that make breastfeeding less accessible for many Black families. From underrepresentation in healthcare and media to higher rates of early return to work without lactation accommodations, Black parents often face challenges that go unrecognized—and unresolved.

We stand with the founders and advocates of BBW in saying: Black families deserve equal access to breastfeeding support. Representation matters. Culturally competent care matters. And the powerful stories and resilience of Black parents deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

This week is a reminder that equity must be intentional. It’s not enough to promote breastfeeding. We must ensure that every family feels included and supported in that journey.

Why We Created Milk by Mom: Turning Pressure Into Peace of Mind

We started Milk by Mom with one mission: to make it easier for parents to feed their babies breast milk—on their own terms. The truth is, breastfeeding doesn’t always go according to plan. Life, work, supply issues, travel, and time apart from baby can make it feel impossible to keep going.

Our freeze-drying service gives your milk the convenience of formula, without sacrificing the nutrition and security your baby deserves. By safely turning your frozen breast milk into a shelf-stable powder (with a 3-year shelf life!), we help families preserve every ounce of liquid gold they worked so hard to pump.

No more spoiled milk during travel. No more overflowing freezers. No more wondering if you’ll have enough. Just your milk, your way, ready whenever and wherever you need it.

Supporting All Families, All Month (and Year) Long

We love that August brings so much attention to the beauty and benefits of breastfeeding, but our support doesn’t stop on the 31st. At Milk by Mom, we’re here every day, helping parents turn stress into confidence and goals into reality.

So whether you’re building a stash for daycare, storing milk for a future baby, or finding ways to continue feeding while going back to work—we’ve got you.

This month, let’s honor every parent who’s ever sat under a nursing cover, pumped in a bathroom stall, cried over spilled milk, or celebrated a full bottle. Let’s cheer on every caregiver choosing to feed with care, however that looks for them.

And if we can help make that journey a little easier, we’re honored to do it.

Let’s keep moving forward together—toward equity, support, and flexibility for every family.
